Solenopsis Saevissima
Native to some parts of South America and imported to parts of Africa and the Galápagos Islands, Solenopsis saevissima is a fire ant that has a painful sting similar to that of the Red Imported Fire Ant. There is currently no evidence of the existence of Solenopsis saevissima in North America. Just like other Solenopsis species, S. saevissima have polymorphic workers. The behavior and color of this species is very similar to Solenopsis invicta, but S. invicta and S. saevissima can be told apart by the differently shaped and proportioned head, thorax, and post-petiole on S. saevissima. Like Solenopsis invicta, Solenopsis saevissima can be housed in a number of different setups, since they are highly adaptable. Humidity in their formicarium is ideal. Based on how much protein this species is fed and how warm their setup is, they can grow at very fast rates and become very aggressive. These species do not need to hibernate due to their tropical origins. Solenopsis saevissima diets are similar to other Solenopsis species. Having Honey, nectar, hummingbird nectar, sugar water, syrup, and fruit juices. For protein they will consume, crickets, cockroaches, grasshoppers, mealworms, superworms, grubs, waxworms, and fruit flies. Solenopsis saevissima usually fly during April-July. Due to the little knowledge on these ants, we have limited information so we are sorry if we do not have all the information.
